The first thing that makes us visualise our sustenance is food. Anything which makes us feel the lack of it urges fear in our mind and if this fear spreads like a wildfire throughout a large area than it forms a crisis. This pandemic time also made us realise the importance of food. Where measures were being taken regarding health care sectors involving hygiene and sanitation, the matter of providing nutrition rich safe food also placed itself among the high concern list. Nutritional, readily available food is ensuring immunity to every living being, has been a lot necessary taking the recent events into account.

“World Food Day” which is being celebrated on 16th of October this year would also bring high levels of concern. The previous year this day set out its theme of ‘Zero Hunger’ with the goal of achieving sustainable and healthy diets affordable and available to all. And as some acts form the roots of those overwhelming blossoms the United Nations World Food Programme adds to this benchmark of winning the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger and improve conditions for peace.

Why should we make sure that the food is healthy, affordable and available to all? Food needs to be healthy as it not only ensures immunity to fight against diseases but also makes us strong both physically and mentally and a strong human force result in an all-around progress of a nation. An affordable and easily available food source guarantees that no soul goes hungry at night and people with full bellies are a prospect of better future.

While we focus on making food reach every mouth around the globe how often do we look into the matter that it is not wasted, thrown away or kept safe until it reaches out to people? Yes, that’s right that the in past few years food security has come on the discussion table of future planners. Food security is something that guarantees that the grains are not hoarded, and a good harvest is kept as safeguard which will help during food shortages and that food is not left unprotected at the sake of pests. Although a lot of issues are raised on our food needs, but the problem is far more complicated than it seems. Under such circumstances our awareness of how our food is being secured for our sustainability and for future generations it would be good on our part as students to take one step about knowing more about what all concerns our food and how can we add up to its security on this ‘World Food Day’.
